Wine Definitions
Ever have a hard time figuring out what people are talking about when it comes to wine? Understanding the following wine definitions can make a world of difference.
Acetic Taste - Wine that has undergone oxidation can often develop an acetic taste. Sometimes this taste adds a desireable complexity to the taste of the wine. However, usually this is a sign that the wine has gone bad.
Aromatic - Fruity and floral smells in wine.
Beefy - A substantial, solid, or chunky red wine.
Body - A term used to describe the flavor, texture, and alcohol content of a wine.
Bouquet - How a wine smells, its aroma.
Chewy - Used to describe a full-bodied, strong flavor, tannic wine.
Complex - A wine that reveals a multitude of different aromas and flavor characteristics. A balanced, interesting wine with a depth of flavor.
Crisp - A term used to describe an acidic white wine which has fresh and clean characteristics.
Deep - A full flavoured wine usually needed aeration to reach its peak.
Dry - the result of having little to no sugars remaining in the wine after fermentation.
Robust - A full-bodied, full-flavored, powerful wine.
Tannins - a major and natural component of red wines, found in grape seed, skins and stems. The longer the wine stays in contact with these parts during the wine making process, the more tannin in the wine their usually is.
Tart - A term used to describe an acidic wine. Sometimes this is desireable in a dry white wine.
Tartrate Crystals - The crystals naturally found in wine, often found on the cork or at the bottom of a bottle of fine wine.
Toasty - A term often used to describe white wines where the flavor includes a hint of the wooden barrel.
Tough - A wine with too much, or overpowering tannin.
